Before & After Photos of Custom Project in Manhattan Beach, California

Coming off of a highly successful photo shoot this weekend with South Bay Magazine, (who showed up at the most recent project we worked on in Manhattan Beach and decked out the patio for a “Brunch” feature set to come out this April), so we wanted to share our before and after pics with our fans…

This project was unique – we had a custom request from our client to use 100 year old, re-claimed redwood to create a custom pergola for the outdoor living space…that is the centerpiece for the space, but it turned into an incredible beach pad that garnered local media attention!

And this is why The Cutting Edge Landscape is opening a new office in the uber-trendy Orange County area! People love our work…

BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS OF MANHATTAN BEACH PROJECT…More After Photos will also be in South Bay Magazine this Spring, along with The Cutting Edge Landscape CEO, Matt Preuss…

Old World Charm, with New World Techniques

The Cutting Edge Landscape, one of the respected leaders in landscape design in Southern California for the past decade, recently completed a unique project using 100-year-old reclaimed redwood to create a custom outdoor living space that introduced modern techniques.

The specialty product and process for the most recent effort from The Cutting Edge Landscape, led by landscape contractor and CEO Matt Preuss, incorporated the reclaimed redwood to create a time-worn and naturally distressed look for an over-sized Pergola, enhancing the natural appeal of the outdoor living space. This project combined a blend of old world charm and urban design as Preuss reinvented landscaping roles, while linking decades of disciplines.

“There’s an increasing sense that landscaping practices are able to better manage complex urban change over time”, says Preuss. “Our landscaping focus is a place where the arts -both old world and new age – can connect with urbanism, ecology and architecture.”

Details are the cornerstone of this business – from design, installation, innovative techniques, use of sustainability practices and with budgeting – no stone is left unturned. As seen in the most recent custom project from The Cutting Edge Landscape, details (and attention to each detail) matter.

The Cutting Edge Landscape is also emerging into new, affluent neighborhoods, and most recently, in the super trendy, Orange County. For more information on The Cutting Edge Landscape, check out www.thecuttingedgelandscape.com

We at The Cutting Edge Landscape, love decorating with terra cotta pots.

Private courtyards, tiles, olive oil jars, framed views, tile roofs, tile

Empty Planters Add Decorative Garden Touch

When containers look as good as these, forget about planting them, although you could insert a pot in the top and let a climbing nasturtium (look it up!) or small-leaved ivy (Hedera) spiral out and down. When arranging pots to give antiquity and impact, opt for echoing shapes that build up in height, and either give them a prominent position or half conceal them among arching ferns. Erik Braunitzer, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Shares Tips on Getting Your Yard Ready for Spring!

One of our favorite real estate experts, Erik Braunitzer of Douglas Elliman Real Estate in NYC,  sat down with our team at The Cutting Edge Landscape, to share some insightful and trendy tricks in preparing your yard for Spring – here’s what he had to say -

By Erik Braunitzer, and courtesy of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, agents for New York City Apartments.

“As a homeowner, having a beautifully landscaped yard is a source of pride. Because your yard and landscaping are the first things your visitors see when they arrive at your home, the investment of your time is a worthwhile endeavor. The beginning of spring is a time of intense activity in preparing your landscaping and yard for the upcoming growing season. After many months of dormancy, plants and lawns reawaken come early spring. The early spring days are your opportunity as a homeowner to prepare your lawn and landscaping to provide another year of beauty and enjoyment for you, your family and neighbors. There are several lawn and garden maintenance needs that will help you get your landscaping and yard ready for another year of growth.

Cleanup
During the winter, the rains, snows and wind likely brought down debris from trees. Use a rake to remove any twigs and branches that have fallen onto your lawn. Pull out any weeds that have started to grow, before they can multiply throughout your lawn. Note any areas of your lawn that are thin or bare, and purchase spring grass seed suitable for the weather and your yard’s level of sun and shade. If your grass is growing, give it a trim using the highest blade setting on your mower. Mulch the clippings for added fertilizer. Use an edger to give a polished look to the periphery of your lawn.

Fertilize
Early spring is the time to fertilize your garden, flower beds and lawn. Use the proper mixture of fertilizer for your soil conditions and the types of plants growing in your yard. Collect a soil sample for nutrient and pH analysis and make any necessary amendments to your soil to ensure optimal growth later in the season.

Garden Prep
Use a hoe, tiller or shovel to turn the soil of your flower and garden beds. Take care to avoid the roots of perennial plants. One to two weeks after turning the soil, pull any sprouted weeds. Add compost to the soil and work it in to give the nutrients a chance to mix into the dirt for optimal plant growth.

Flower Beds
Prune your rose bushes in early spring to encourage healthy and vigorous growth. Divide any unwieldy perennials that have overgrown their space. Remove any perennials that are unhealthy or show signs of disease.

Preparing your yard and landscaping for spring will whet your appetite for another season of keeping a beautiful and healthy looking lawn. By starting early on your garden and lawn maintenance, you gain the advantage of starting out with robust and hearty plants.

5 Creative Christmas Tree Recycling Ideas

Don’t just toss it on the curb — put it to use!

This story comes from PlanetGreen.com - http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/5-creative-christmas-tree-recycling-ideas.html

If you had a real tree adorning your home for the holidays this year, chances are good that the needles are starting to drop and you’re ready to get rid of it. While many communities have curbside Christmas tree recycling (which is a good thing!) it’s always better to reuse something. Reuse a Christmas tree? Yes, you can! Here are five creative ideas for giving that Christmas tree one last (green) hurrah¡¡¡

5 Christmas Tree Recycling Ideas

1. Make a Wintry Potpourri Simply mix some of the needles from your tree with some cinnamon sticks, cloves, dried orange peel, and maybe some eucalyptus, add a few drops of a matching essential oil, and cover for a week to let the scents blend. Place this great seasonal potpourri in small bowls around your home for a comforting, natural holiday-inspired scent. (Hat tip: Seasonal Wisdom)
2. Edge Your Garden Beds
If you have a rustic or cottage-style garden, you might want to try this frugal idea for edging your garden beds. Simply saw the trunk of your tree into two-inch thick rounds, and set them on edge (burying the bottom half into the soil) around your beds. (Hat tip: This Old House Magazine)
3. Make Some Coasters
Most Christmas tree trunks are just about the same diameter as your favorite cup or glass. This Etsy seller makes them into coasters, varnished to protect tabletops from pine sap. It would be fairly simple to do this yourself with a saw, some sandpaper, and a little bit of time.

4. Make Rustic Tea Light Holders
If you love candlelight, you might want to try making votive candle holders from your Christmas tree trunk. These would work wonderfully in a rustic home, but the juxtaposition of the natural look of these votive holders in a modern home setting would be fun as well.

5. Decorate It for the Birds
Backyard birds are grateful for a bit of extra food during the winter months, and you can get a few more months to admire your tree using this tip. Remove all of the decorations, and move the tree, stand and all, into your garden. Decorate the tree with strung popcorn and cranberries, and make ornaments out of suet or peanut butter and birdseed (which would be a great project to do with kids, by the way!) As a bonus, birds can shelter in the tree if they need protection from harsh winter weather. (Hat tip: Birding at About.com

Los Angeles’ Best Secret Garden….

Heard of Trancas Canyon Nursery? Well meet this awesome secret garden now.

Trancas Canyon Nursery

6444 Trancas Canyon Road

Malibu, CA

310-457-3981

“When a developer linked to Wal-Mart threatened to wipe out Trancas Canyon Nursery to build a strip mall, furious Malibu residents including Martin Sheen and Katharine Ross (The Graduate‘s Elaine) turned out in full force to help preserve their best-kept secret. The nursery is run by a sweet Latino man, and although it does sit on Walmart family land, it is the stuff of storybooks. A house of lilies sits in the middle, its drowsy aroma doing a Wizard of Oz number on passersby. This loveliness is rivaled only by Trancas Canyon Nursery’s insane backyard — a potted jungle of flowers, greens, cacti, veggies and fruits that fade wordlessly into the resident foliage. It’s just detangled enough to wander through, but not so much as to lift the spell. And then there’s the bunnies. (Yes, bunnies.) And chickens. Benches. Fountains. Not even America’s fattest corporate bully could touch this kind of sacredness. Wal-Mart affiliates reportedly agreed to work out a new lease agreement with the nursery.” – per LAWeekly columnist, Simone Wilson.

The venue recently won a Best of Award from LA Weekly….not too shabby….
